Recent Cinema 4D Projects

Recent 3D projectsI’ve embarked on a couple of self-directed projects of late, and thought I would share some info about them here. The more I use Cinema 4D, the more I dig it.

A really big project, of which I have only completed a fraction, is a motion graphics promo that deals with music, or more specifically; music devices of the past 4 decades. I’m going for a kind of commercial, slick, music-driven aesthetic, and so far I have done the 1980′s “Walkman” section. You can probably guess what the other 3 main consumer audio players were in the surrounding decades, but just in case it’s eluding anyone I won’t spoil the surprise! The section I have done so far, is included in my demo reel over at elliottedit.com, so go check it out… and check back for future expansions to the piece.

Secondly, I wanted to give props to greyscalegorilla.com for the informative and fun “Hydraulic Arm” tutorial by Chris Schmidt. Great job Chris!

As someone who has only been using C4D for a year, (and there’s been plenty of slacking off time in there) my modeling ain’t bad, but my character rigging, understanding of physics, and dynamics, etc., leaves a lot to be desired. I learned more than a few new techniques in this tutorial, and I’m really excited to apply them to my future work. Whether-or-not I will be sticking a hydraulic arm in my next project or not, I don’t know, but there’s principles in there that have a lot of power, and I’m sure I will be using them again in the near future.

Final Cut Pro or Express? What Gives?

Final Cut Express 4
I have never used Final Cut Express, but know the odd person who owns a copy, and recently was asked if I’d like to buy a copy off a broke acquaintance. I’ve always used “Pro” and knew that there was limited functionality in Express, so I wasn’t bowled-over at the prospect of owning a copy. But, what I do know about the application has recently increased ten-fold thanks to Ken Stone’s Final Cut site, which features an informative article from Steve Martin about all the various features shared or not shared between the two apps. I won’t attempt to summarize all of it here, but there is a good deal of info in the article which I thought would be worth sharing via hyperlink. Enjoy.

Entity

At one of my first design jobs I was given a piece of paper with HTML entities and told where the clip art folder was. I quickly disregarded the information about the clip art but the HTML entities have stayed with me throughout my career. They can be used practically to make a page validate. Or as a nice design touch such as the dagger † (†) or the heart ♥ (♥). No matter why you use them they are a important building block to hand coding HTML.

Typographer Interviews

For a while I have been enjoying the Creative Characters e-newsletter, which features a new typographer every issue. Typographers are often an invisible segment of the design community. We use and appreciate their fonts everyday but you don’t often hear from them.

Creative Characters can cure your curiosity about the precise, meticulous  genius behind your favorite font or foundry.

I believe these interviews humanize type which can on the surface seem intimidating. Hearing their individual stories of why they chose to be designers and what inspires them is really interesting to me as a fellow designer.

Check it out for yourself by signing up for the Creative Characters newsletter on get the full collection by checking out the Creative Characters book.

Web Notes

If your like me you have a huge list of bookmarks on your web browser.  Some are sites you want to visit a lot, but most just have a bit of content you may want to review later. I was checking out the Smashing newsletter and was pleased to read about an online note taking service that allows you to make a specific bookmarklet or  email the specific web content to yourself. Notes For Later which is compatible with Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE 8 browsers.

Cinema 4D 12!

On September 1st, Maxon released their new version of Cinema 4D. Their Canadian sales rep mentioned this might be imminent back in April when I talked to him at the Adobe CS5 roadshow in Vancouver. I was discussing the somewhat steep price-point of the application for a poor novice like myself, and he alluded to a coming Summer software sale that turned out to be true a couple months later. $1300 (for the Broadcast Ed) on sale was still a bit rich for me, but the new ver is only a few hun more, so in a round-about way I was happy to see that if I do scare up the funds for the Broadcast Edition it won’t be that much more than the sale price on ver 11.5. I should mention that I’ve been training on a demo version of 11.5 which was available to all attendees of the aforementioned roadshow event.
I will look to test this 12th release as soon as I can, however it appears that many of the new features are geared towards character animation and the like – not an area that I am that interested in. But, they do make mention of an improved render queue, which I don’t think would hurt the application.
Anyway, I am continuing to dabble in the app when I have time, and it is actually pretty easy to use after taking only a few introductory lessons. (Now, if only writing glowing reviews would encourage Maxon to send me a free copy! – ya I know, spoken like a true sell-out!)

Typography on the Web

As a type nerd the one thing that has always bothered me about the web is the limited font choices. Yet I also don’t want to be spending all day slicing button images.

I’ve learned to scale back my type expectations for the sake of accessibility in the past. I now however have a new tool to satisfy my type lust, font linking. Font linking allows you to specify your font through your CSS! I know this has been around for a while but I have never tried it out.

Typekit makes it very easy and possible with a monthly subscription or some fonts are also available free of charge.

The code is so easy!

<link href=”http://insertyouronlinefontfoundryofchoice.com/css? family=Reenie+Beanie:regular”  rel=”stylesheet”  type=”text/css”>

<style type=”text/css”>

<!–

p {

font-family: ‘Reenie Beanie’, serif;

text-align: center;

}

–>

</style>

</head>

Computer Spill

In the 80′s when my family got their first computer, eating  near this sacred object was forbidden.  Since then technology is much less special. It’s become a part of our daily lives, and we often don’t really even think about how fragile it can be.

I often eat my lunch at my desk have a coffee while web surfing without even thinking about it. Unfortunately this can have dire consequences, especially for a laptop.

When I was in school a close friend had an unfortunate spill which ruined her keyboard. It was the consequence of skyping and drinking tea.

I hope I never have such a spill, but if I do there is a handy tutorial with a guide to saving you computer.

Logo Ideation

I’m always on the lookout for interesting pro-bono jobs, and yesterday on craigslist there was a posting by an adult recreational hockey club in need of a logo. They were called the “Lumberjacks” and wanted something with skates, wood, axes, beards – whatever – all the usual lumberjack motifs. I thought that I could probably whip something up for the team – trying to steer clear of any trademark infringement on the Canuck’s “Johnny Canuck” logo – and thought it would be cool to see my design on their jerseys and stuff… they also mentioned some payment in the form of beer, so needless-to-say that piqued my interest.

No sooner than I hit submit on my response email to the ad, did I receive an undeliverable mail notice indicating the ad had been removed by the user. I had taken approximately 20 minutes since the ad had first appeared, to sketch out a bunch of logo ideas, and compose my email, so I was inclined to think that they wouldn’t be so inundated with logos by that time to have removed the ad due to overwhelming response. Thus, I surmised that the fact they weren’t offering any “real” payment meant their ad had been flagged for removal by the CL community… again; that is purely an assumption on my part. Who really knows/cares? Anyway, I sketched out a few logo ideas and thought they were pretty good, and my partner Bonnie thought that they would be worth developing as a self-directed project be there a client or not. So, to that end, I have posted those sketches above, and will post again with my more developed logos in the near future.
